The All-Natural Bust: A Naked truth

PepsiCo’s Naked Juices Have to Drop ‘All Natural’ Label After $9 Million Class Action Lawsuit.

Don’t believe all the labeling hype. Marketing companies know exactly what they’re doing when they slap on the ‘All Natural’ label on their products. Unless the product has the stamped logo certifying that it has met regulation requirements, it should be left to your own judgement when reading the ingredients list. The differentiation between what is all-natural and non-GMO has become a bit of a muddled mess. Before you start panicking, know that the key is not to always eat organic, but rather to know where your food and ingredients are coming from. Making healthy choices and keeping processed foods to a minimum is the best way to go.

What to look for when reading labels

The shorter the list the better. When eating clean, diet micromanaging can become a real headache so I go for key things like added sugars(<30 g/day) and wheat. If I find too much of those things, I put the product down. Then of course there’s that pesky little ingredient labeled ‘natural flavoring’.

What is ‘natural flavoring’? According to the Code of Federal Regulations:

“The term natural flavor or natural flavoring means the essential oil, oleoresin, essence or extractive, protein hydrolysate, distillate, or any product of roasting, heating or enzymolysis, which contains the flavoring constituents derived from a spice, fruit or fruit juice, vegetable or vegetable juice, edible yeast, herb, bark, bud, root, leaf or similar plant material, meat, seafood, poultry, eggs, dairy products, or fermentation products thereof, whose significant function in food is flavoring rather than nutritional.”
